The article examines syncretism as a strategy for modifying the detective genre in P. D. James’s novel “Death Comes to Pemberley” (2011), a sequel of J. Austen’s classic novel “Pride and Prejudice” (1813). It explores how the author, while preserving the detective core, violates traditional canons of the classic detective story: abandoning the figure of a detective, replacing deductive investigation with the characters’ ethical reflection, blurring the "murderer-victim" dichotomy, and transforming the ending from legal punishment to ethical catharsis. Particular attention is paid to the intertextual dialogue with J. Austen’s novel “Pride and Prejudice”, which serves as a unique mechanism for merg-ing the detective novel with the novel of morals, courtroom drama, psychological prose, and moral parable.ru_RU
