Return of the “Long genealogy” to school textbooks on the history of Belarus

Abstract

Author of this article analyzes texts of series of school textbooks on the history of Belarus, which were published in 2016–18. The author argues that, in comparison with previous textbooks, there is an increasing trend to derive the origins of Belarusian statehood from the history of the Principality of Polotsk, as well as emphasizing the Belarusian character of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. The reconstruction of school textbooks can be considered as part of a larger turn in the historical politics of the Belarusian authorities, the transition to the “long genealogy” of Belarusian statehood.=У артыкуле разглядаецца серыя школьных падручнікаў па гісторыі Беларусі, якія выйшлі ў 2016-18 гадах. У параўнанні з папярэднімі падручнікамі заўважная тэндэнцыя выводзіць вытокі беларускай дзяржаўнасці з гісторыі Полацкага княства, а таксама падкрэсліваць беларускі характар Вялікага Княства Літоўскага. Перастварэнне школьных падручнікаў можна разглядаць як частку больш шырокага павароту ў гістарычнай палітыцы беларускіх уладаў, пераходу да “доўгай генеалогіі” беларускай дзяржаўнасці.
