| Abstract: | Рассматривается мотив таинственного портрета в английской готической литературе второй половины XVIII в. на материале произведений Х. Уолпола (Horace Walpole, 1717–1797) «Замок Отранто» (The Castle of Otranto, 1764), К. Рив (Clara Reeve, 1729–1807) «Старый английский барон» (The Old English Baron, 1777), А. Радклиф (Ann Radcliffe, 1764–1823) «Удольфские тайны» (The Mysteries of Udolpho, 1794). Анализируются эстетические особенности данного мотива, отмечается его роль в создании готической атмосферы и раскрытии внутренних конфликтов персонажей. Выявляются ключевые функции портрета как средства выражения страха, тайны, двойственности и фантастического. Анализируется историчность портрета. Отмечается значение портрета как вещной детали и его связь с художественным пространством. |

The article notes the aesthetic features of the motif of the mysterious portrait and its role in creating a Gothic atmosphere and revealing the internal conflicts of the characters. It notes the significance of the portrait as a material detail and its connection with the literary space. |
